When a toilet problem is an emergency.
- The bowl is overflowing and the water will not stop rising.
- Water leaks from the base onto the floor or through the ceiling below.
- The only toilet in the house will not flush.
- Sewage backs up into the toilet or tub, which points to a clog farther down the line.
- The supply line is spraying or dripping steadily.
Toilet repair in Garfield, symptom by symptom.
Most toilet problems come from a short list of parts. A flapper that does not seal lets water leak from the tank to the bowl, and the fill valve refills over and over. A fill valve that sticks can overflow. A wax ring that has failed lets water seep out at the base.
Many Garfield bathrooms are small and on upper floors of two family houses, so a small leak can reach the ceiling below before anyone notices. If a stain shows up under a bathroom, a toilet is the first place to look. According to the City of Garfield's 2018 water quality report, hardness is above the recommended range, so scale on fill valves and rim jets is a common cause of weak flushes.
Common toilet problems and fixes.
If a toilet clogs repeatedly with other fixtures slow too, the problem is farther down the line. See drain cleaning.
| Problem. | Usual cause. | Fix. |
|---|---|---|
| Runs on and off. | Worn flapper or fill valve. | Replace the flapper or fill valve. |
| Weak flush. | Clogged rim jets or low water level. | Clean jets, adjust water level. |
| Wobbles or leaks at base. | Failed wax ring or loose closet bolts. | Reset the toilet with a new wax ring. |
| Tank sweats or leaks. | Cracked tank or failed tank bolts. | Replace bolts, gasket or tank. |
| Clogs again and again. | Blockage past the trap or an undersized older toilet. | Auger the line, camera the drain, consider replacement. |

Choosing a replacement toilet.
When a toilet is cracked, constantly clogged or decades old, a new one makes sense. Look at the rough in distance, which is the measurement from the wall to the center of the drain. Most are twelve inches, but older bathrooms may differ, and a toilet that does not match will not fit.
Elongated bowls are more comfortable and round bowls save space. Taller bowls are easier for many adults to use. A modern low flow toilet uses much less water per flush than a toilet from the 1970s, which also helps on a metered bill.
Hard water and toilet parts.
Garfield's 2018 water quality report lists hardness above the recommended range. Scale builds on fill valves, flappers and the rim jets under the bowl. If your toilet flushes weakly, soaking the jets in vinegar can restore some flow, and a plumber can clean the rest.
Parts in hard water wear faster. Replacing a flapper every few years costs far less than the water wasted by a leaky one.

Questions homeowners ask us.
Yes. The emergency line is open 24/7. Shut the supply valve and tell the dispatcher what the toilet is doing.
A worn flapper or fill valve is the usual cause. Both are inexpensive parts to replace.
The wax ring may have failed or the bolts may be loose. The toilet needs to be lifted and reset.
Yes. We check the rough in size, install it and test it. We cannot warranty the product itself.
Lift the tank lid, push the flapper down and close the supply valve behind the toilet.
It is if it is your only toilet or if sewage is coming up. Otherwise, a plunger may clear it, and the line can be checked at a regular visit.
